URBAN ART CONFERENCE
Day 2 of our Urban Art Conference was a smash! We heard Keli Polluck, Edward Campbell, and Anna Lake tell us how real stories from a place and people are heard, felt and flow into how the identity of a ‘place’ is crafted by creative directors and brand builders. This panel had everyone on the edge of their seats giving input into the challenges and opportunities of defining our own city in this era.
In the afternoon we brought together mega graffiti writers panel of Lady Benz, Curly, Wesley, and Nasarimba who spoke towards how this art form sits in the public realm today, it’s capacity to create community while equally becoming a politicized and divisive culture within the mainstream. From both the audience and the speakers it was clear that the graffiti writers of 2024 are not from a monolithic, flattened culture and the noise of the underground continues to be unique, constantly shifting and complicated.
Thank you all for engaging with our first ever Urban Art Conference, we are exciting to bring you full episodes of our panels very soon!
HIGH PARK PARTY HIT
On Saturday, the downtown rooftop of High Park filled up with vendors, DJs, ballers and all of you for our annual rooftop jam! MRBEEFYBUNZ, SWYM, TIARRUHH, BABYTEETH.EXE and Jonathan Crane took us on a journey of jungle, house, trap, afrobeats and drill! We enjoyed the 3v3 basketball tournament hosted by local faves, Calgary Surge’s Priscilla Cherry and Amanti. All explored the Fresh Out The Trap curated marketplace featuring an array of local vendors while sipping our limited edition beer, DAISY CHAIN crafted by Establishment Brewing Company.
A FANTASTIC MOVIE SCREENING
What a spectacular night! We saw over 300 attendees for our Chungking Express for our Movies With A View! We love bringing unique and interesting art in all forms to BUMP Festival, and Wong-Kar Wai’s cult film CHUNGKING EXPRESS was the perfect movie to bring to Calgary on a warm summer day under an orange moon. We hope you left the rooftop curious about this director’s incredible work and wanting to dive into cinema from around the world.
Thank you to Deng Dumplings for keeping us fed through the night with hot, steaming plates of dumplings. Thank you to our collaborators at Calgary Cinematheque for showing this film with us and our presenting partner Carvel Creative for helping us bring this awesome event to all of you for the 2024 BUMP Festival.
Thank you to our amazing sponsors and community partners, including our presenting sponsor TD Ready Commitment, who have supported our first week and continue to support the BUMP Festival as we continue our mission to create accessible public art that uplifts communities across Calgary!
