Sustainable Calgary wins National Award!

Thursday October 31, 2024

We have some exciting news! Sustainable Calgary’s “Kids Reimagine School Streets” project has earned a 2024 National Urban Design Award. This initiative, created in collaboration with SPECTACLE Bureau for Architecture and Urbanism and other local partners, sought to empower children to design safer, more inviting school routes.

It’s within this project that BUMP Festival’s first Asphalt Art Mural was born beside the Connaught School. The DAYDREAM mural by Ben Johnston was made possible through BUMP Festival’s collaboration with the City of Calgary, Sustainable Calgary, and Bloomberg’s Asphalt Art Initiative, transforming 10th Street SW into a safer, more vibrant pedestrian space for school children and the community. With global projects in cities like London and Florence, this initiative reimagines public spaces for a more sustainable, less car-dependent future.

As we celebrate these powerful, collaborative efforts, we’re reminded of our shared mission to create equitable and engaging public art spaces in Calgary. If you’re nearby, stop by 1269-1315 10 St SW and see how the mural and project reflect our vision for Calgary—a city that values community and creativity on every corner.

Congrats to the whole Sustainable Calgary team!
