Matthew Springer is a multidisciplinary artist and musician based in Calgary Alberta. Matthew is a 2020 graduate of the Alberta University of the Arts and currently works as faculty in the Bookstore, while maintaining a very active artistic practice creating works such as album covers, murals, beer can labels, clothing design, posters, & more. Also while performing in many multitudes of music projects around the city.
Through Matthew’s illustration he loves to exploring wacky characters, dreamlike worlds, and distant landscapes to escape into the alternate realities of our own imaginations. Experiencing art through joy and childlike wonder to appreciate and savour the beautiful simplicities of life. Matthew is very inspired to create art that encourages positivity and the drive to continuously better mental health, both within ourselves, but also to give back to our friends and communities around us through art. A smile is one of the simplest ways to bring us all together! 🙂
Mural Title
“The Love of Music”
Mural Statement
Welcome to Commonwealth, the ethos of music! A magical place where creatures and folks of all kinds come together for the universal love of great music, dancing, and friends! This design features characters in a marching band, performing and enjoying music. It’s a piece that relates to community, the love of art, and the love for creative and diverse groups of people who enjoy and perform in this space. Bright colours and energetic creatures were chosen to communicate that this institution is a fun, lively music venue. Many characters started off as sketches drawn right after I came home from local music shows and are inspired by friendship and the vast and vibrant local music community.
