Mural Title
“Corridor, 2026”
Mural Statement
In response to BUMP’s 2026 theme, “Of Simmering, and the Surge,” Geneva Haley’s mural interprets Alberta as a wildlife corridor, a place that is constantly in motion even when it appears still. Migration is both a large seasonal force and a constant condition of life. Each year, this province changes dramatically as migratory birds, insects, weather, food sources, and seasonal conditions move through the province. These movements shape the habitats and food webs that allow resident species to survive and adapt here.
For this piece, Haley matches familiar, non-migrating animals with migratory species: a coyote with red-winged blackbirds and a Swainson’s hawk; a mule deer and its fawn with snow geese and a green darner dragonfly. Doors and tunnel-like forms move through the piece as symbols of corridors, thresholds, and passage. Each wall contains a small native grassland landscape, suggesting that the larger landscape is carried through each crossing. ‘
Her piece extends out a hand to us all – do you recognize the neighbourhood coyote, the prairie mule deer? What does it mean to call this place our home, a place that has always been crossed by many lives?
