Calgary, Canada
Derek Simmers is a muralist and illustrator currently living in Calgary, AB. His work explores public art and community engagement as a means to foster meaningful relationships between humans, other living beings and the patterns that emerge to shape our experience.
He utilizes ambiguity and dynamic compositions to seek new possibilities for grappling with chaos and instability. You may recognize some of Simmers’ murals around the city including “The Kiss” located in Inglewood, and another mural at Burnt Toast Studios. He also regularly collaborates with his sibling and BUMP 2019 Alumni, Kat Simmers.
Mural Statement
The idea of this piece is to play with contrasting the enclosed nature of the space with an overall composition that feels expansive and dynamic. Like a prairie sky, which is what I’ve decided to reference for my palette.
